NCAC-APA has opportunities for you to share your knowledge and expertise by serving on one or more of our Chapter operating committees. Participation in Chapter Committees is a great way to meet people, learn more about APA and the Chapter, and increase your professional skills. There are opportunities for ongoing participation, or for short- term commitments. Chapter members are free to join more than one committee since some only meet occasionally, others for specific tasks only, and some will communicate primarily via email. The following describes the roles and responsibilities of each. Find your favorites and contact the designated Chair today.
The Board encourages all members to get involved. Each Committee seeks those interested in helping to guide and develop the programs discussed below. Be a part of working to improve the quality and frequency of sponsored events and to raise the stature of the Chapter and the profession within the region. We look forward to your participation.
Professional Development Committee
Work with the Vice President for Professional Development to provide training opportunities for Chapter members applying for AICP membership, reporting to APA on continuing education activities of the Chapter, and advising Chapter members about AICP programs, policies and requirements. Committee members with an interest in the evolution and impact of the AICP needed, AICP membership preferred, but not required.
Communications Committee
Work with the Vice President for Communications to improve how the Chapter interacts with its membership. Currently, the committee is responsible for publishing the quarterly newsletter, Capitol News, collecting and distributing job and event announcements on the chapter email listserve and keeping the website current. This Committee meets on an as-needed basis and ideally performs most of its duties via email.
Legislative and Policy Planning Committee
Work with the Vice President for Policy and Legislation in the tasks of monitoring local and regional planning issues in the Washington metropolitan area, as well as pending state and federal legislation, and bringing issues to the attention of the Board for consideration and possible action. This committee provides a forum for the discussion of planning issues and action relevant to the membership and practice of planning in the region. The Committee is responsible for developing short and long range plans for implementing the adopted policies. Committee members are needed who have an interest in these topics, which also represent a major area of support and action by National APA. This Chapter is in a unique position to not only monitor legislation of local interest, but to assist National APA with monitoring or even testifying on federal legislation that impacts the profession.
Partnerships and Events Committee
Plan programs or events that create networking opportunities and advance the goals and policies of the Chapter and the profession in the region. Explore avenues for mutual growth, education, and assistance with allied organizations in the Washington area. This committee also coordinates with university planning degree programs in the Chapter area to provide appropriate support and services. Those with membership in or contacts with related organizations strongly encouraged to join.
Awards Committee
The Chapter gives awards bi-annually to outstanding projects, people, and organizations for exemplary achievement in the planning field. The Committee will organize and coordinate the awards program including determining award categories and nomination criteria, reviewing applications for the Chapter awards, and determining recipients of awards.
Election Committees
Only function before and during the biennial Chapter elections. They will be appointed within three months before the next election. The Teller Committee provides the official count of ballots for the election of Officers and Directors. The Teller Committee consists of at least two Chapter members in addition to the Chapter Secretary (who serves as chair of the Teller Committee unless she/he is a candidate, in which case the Board appoints an alternate chair). The Nominating Committee recommends a slate of Officers and Directors for the Board election. This committee consists of four Chapter members (of whom no more than two serve on the current Board) plus the President.
